Pro Baseball: Kyle Douglas Russell, Chattanooga Lookouts
published May. 31, 2011Kyle Douglas Russell went 0 for 3 and was walked once in the Chattanooga Lookouts's 4-1 loss at the Birmingham Barons on Monday. Russell graduated from Tomball High School.
A 2005 graduate of Tomball High School, Russell was a second-team high school all-American as a senior. He played three seasons (2006 to 2008) of college baseball at the University of Texas appearing in 175 career games for the Longhorns with a .306 batting average. As a freshman (2006) Russell hit .276 with 10 homers and 42 RBIs to be named a second-team freshman all-American. As a sophomore in 2007, he was named Big XII Conference player of the year after hitting .336 with 28 home runs and 71 RBIs. He was also named a conference all-star and first-team college all-American. Russell was drafted by St. Louis in the fourth round (142nd overall) of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft but did not sign electing to return to Texas for his junior season. In 2008, Russell hit .296 with 19 home runs and 56 RBI, and he was named MVP of the Houston Regional of the NCAA tournament. He was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third round (93th overall) of the 2008 draft, and began his professional career with Ogden of the Pioneer League (Rookie). Russell hit .279 with 11 homers and 46 RBIs and was named a Pioneer League all-star outfielder. In 2009 he was a low-A all-star and Midwest League all-star after hitting .272 with 26 homers and 102 RBIs in 133 games with Great Lakes of the Midwest League. 2010 was split between Inland Empire of the California League (advanced single-A) and Double-A Chattanooga (Southern League) combining to hit .291 with 26 home runs and 81 RBIs.
